More Gmail enhancements

This time with PowerPoint slides:

What is ‘View as slideshow’?

To open a Microsoft PowerPoint (PPT) file without downloading it to your computer:

  1. Open the message containing an attachment.
  2. Click View as slideshow at the bottom of the message.

This will open your slides in a new browser window. You can navigate between slides by clicking the left and right arrow buttons at the top of the screen, or by choosing a specific slide from the dropdown menu in the upper right corner of the screen.

It’s a bare bones application so you can’t resize the PowerPoint or jump ahead to specific slides, though you have some minimal right-click functionality. It’s neat enough though.

Which brings to mind this question: will the Goog find it worthy to purchase web venues like SlideShare or Scribd to ramp up its stake in the virtual office application environment?

6/19/07 Update: Google just bought Zenter, a company that “creates software for online slide presentations.” Total online document presentation domination is on the horizon.  Read more at the Google blog.
