Use Greasemonkey scripts to spice up Meebo

Instant messaging (IM) service Meebo has done all kinds of upgrades and enhancements that make IM a breeze. Did you know you can play games, send documents, and change your profile picture and wallpaper? Of course, this is in addition to all the IM goodness Meebo makes available. But if you want to spice up your Meebo experience even more you can change the wallpaper in Meebo to a picture of your choice.

You’ll need to have Greasemonkey installed in your computer for this tweak to work. Once you do that, go to and download the “customize Meebo backgrounds” script.

Go to your Meebo account, right-click on the Greasemonkey icon on the bottom right-hand of your screen and go to “User Script Commands…” Next, click on the arrow for “set background image…”

A dialog box will appear where you can input the URL of your choice. I’m a big fan of NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day so I put this beautiful shot of the moon eclipsed by Mars:

I changed my wallpaper 10 different times before I found the one I liked best, but the script makes this change immediate. However, if you’re thinking of using Flickr, only pictures under the Creative Commons license work with this script; perhaps it has to do with Flickr’s “static” URL (…)?

Anyhow, there are several more scripts that you can use for Meebo at the site. Give it a whirl and have your favorite online picture(s) as a Meebo background. If you come up with any cool Meebo/Greasemonkey tweaks, let me know!
