Arrived safely at the McCarran airport on a warm and sunny morning. Had great views of the mountains and desert and a wonderful 20,000 high view of what I think is Lake Mead. Flying over Las Vegas proper was fun and our landing was uneventful, just like I like them.
Right after you get out of the gate you’re met with the inevitable slot machines. The airport is fairly crowded but navigable. My cab ride to the UNLV campus cost me $14.00, tho it’s less than 2 miles away.
Most of the conference will take place in the student union building, with the majority of attendees staying at the Tonopah residence halls. It’s the dorm life coming back to horrible reality (white painted cinder blocks, cot-like twin bed, shared bathroom and cheap blinds). However, we do have high-speed internet access for $5.00, it’s close to the Lied Library and the student union, and it’s only $40.00/night.
Tomorrow the conference begins in earnest. And maybe a side trip to the famous strip is in order too.
